Build one timeline before deciding what it means
A late-term feedlot death review should connect identity, pen, days on feed, last normal check, movements, treatments, feed, weather, discovery, and postmortem findings.
Fixed cameras can preserve the visible timeline before the event. They do not establish cause of death or replace a veterinarian, necropsy, or laboratory work.
The useful record lets the feedlot and veterinarian see what is known, what changed, and what remains unknown.
Why the review matters
The last days of the feeding period still need a complete record
Late losses affect animal care, crew confidence, veterinary review, closeout records, and the operation's ability to learn from a case.
Iowa State University began a two-year project on August 1, 2026. It will collect necropsy reports and examine risk factors, timing, and cause.
That project is still underway. It does not provide a new cause, prevention rule, or management result today.
Earlier work also shows why timing matters. A case near the end of feeding can have a different history from an early receiving case.
Five steps for the first review
Preserve evidence before the story hardens
Protect the original record
Keep source video, yard records, treatment records, feed calls, weather data, and discovery notes unchanged. Work from copies when review marks are needed.
Confirm the animal and pen
Connect the animal ID, visual references, home pen, hospital history, movements, days on feed, and the last confirmed location.
Build the last-normal timeline
Record the last direct check that found no concern. Then add each later observation, crew action, movement, and known coverage gap.
Preserve qualified findings
Link the veterinarian report, necropsy record, laboratory accession, sample times, and final interpretation when those records become available.
Close the review clearly
Separate confirmed facts, reasonable questions, and unknowns. Name the reviewer, completed actions, follow-up owner, and close date.

What the camera record adds
Recover visible changes that a point check may miss
Start with the last confirmed normal observation. Review a defined period before discovery, then preserve the source clips and timestamps.
Compare the animal's visible movement, bunk-area presence, water-zone presence, posture, and group position with its own earlier record.
Keep camera state with every observation. Mark darkness, obstruction, weather, missing coverage, and times when the animal was outside the mapped view.
An absence from view is not proof that an animal did not eat, drink, move, or receive care.
Cause belongs to qualified review
Keep observation, diagnosis, and cause as separate fields
A camera can show visible behavior, time, location, and the limits of coverage. It cannot determine a medical cause from video alone.
Use the veterinarian's language for clinical findings. Use the necropsy and laboratory record for postmortem findings.
When cause remains uncertain, record it as uncertain. Do not turn a suspected pattern into a confirmed finding.

Research the case without overstating the evidence
The current Iowa State project is designed to study late-term feedlot deaths through necropsy records. Its work is prospective and has not reported results.
A prior Iowa State survey examined when pen deaths occurred in longer-fed cattle. A peer-reviewed study separately examined risk factors across feeding stages.
