What should the crew do first?
Check cattle, water, gates, and the people working the yard before troubleshooting a screen. Follow the yard emergency plan if the outage affects essential equipment.
Assign one person to maintain the pen record and another to contact technical support. Tell the next shift which views are unavailable.
Write down the last confirmed camera observation and the first time someone noticed the problem. Those times may differ.
A frozen image can look normal. Check its capture time before using it for a loading decision, a pen move, or a head-count comparison.

Is the camera down, or is only the remote view unavailable?
Separate capture, local recording, processing, and remote access. Each can fail while another still works.
A lost internet connection may prevent office or remote access while on-site recording continues. Verify that the recorder is saving new files before making that assumption.
A powered camera can still have a blocked lens, a changed angle, or an incorrect clock. A connected device does not establish usable cattle coverage.
Ask the technician to confirm which pens, gates, and time periods are affected. Record whether local footage exists and who can retrieve it.
Use three plain states in the working record: current observation, delayed observation, or unavailable observation. Attach a capture time and a review owner to each affected pen.
How do you keep the pen count current?
Start with the last verified pen count, then record every arrival, departure, transfer, pull, return, and other removal during the gap.
Keep the event time, head count, source pen, destination pen, and person making the entry. Preserve an animal ID when the move concerns an individual.
Use paper or an approved offline record if the normal software is unavailable. Give each entry a reference that survives later data entry.
Calculate the expected count from the verified starting count plus entries minus exits. Keep that calculation separate from what a person or camera actually observed.
Arrange a direct pen check when safe under the yard procedure. If the check is incomplete, record that limit instead of forcing the observed total to match.
Do not create a new animal identity because camera evidence is missing. Keep the existing electronic identification, or EID, and yard records connected to the review.
What should the outage log contain?
Use one log for the affected views and one movement list linked to it. This keeps technical repair notes from swallowing the cattle record.
A useful entry lets the next person answer four questions: what was unavailable, when it happened, what cattle changed, and what still needs review.

What does a count difference look like in practice?
Consider an illustrative pen with a verified starting count of 120 cattle. During the camera gap, three cattle move to the hospital pen and two return.
The expected count becomes 119. A later direct check records 118, leaving one head to reconcile.
Review both hospital movements, the return records, other gates, and the count method. Assign the difference to a named person with a next check time.
The numbers in this example explain the method; they are not a reported customer result. A missing recording does not explain the difference by itself.
When footage becomes available, attach the relevant original clip to the event. Preserve the earlier entry and record who corrected it, when, and why.
When can the team trust the restarted view?
A picture returning to the screen is the start of recovery. Confirm that the image is new, the clock is correct, and the expected pen area is visible.
Check the lens, camera position, night view where relevant, and local recording. Compare a fresh observation with a direct check or another verified yard record.
If stored footage arrives later, preserve both its capture time and its arrival time. Otherwise, an old event can be mistaken for a new move.
Match recovered footage to existing movement references before adding events. A delayed clip and a paper entry may describe the same cattle transfer.
Close the technical outage only after the affected functions are checked. Keep unresolved cattle differences open until the responsible person has reviewed them.
Record the actual gap even if the final count matches. Agreement afterward does not prove that every movement during the missing period was captured.

Run a planned practice with the cattle crew and technical team. Use an agreed test window and keep animal-care equipment operating normally.
Confirm who notices a stale view, who checks cattle, who keeps the movement list, and who verifies the restart. Include the person covering weekends.
Ask how long the installed storage can retain footage under the actual settings. Establish what happens when space runs low and how protected clips are preserved.
Have qualified personnel review backup power and electrical connections. Do not assume a solar panel or battery gives every camera, network link, and computer the same running time.
