A useful feed call needs the feed record and the cattle timeline.

Start with the silage source, current dry matter, ration version, load, pen, and delivery time. Then add the bunk condition, visible cattle activity, direct checks, and the reason for the next call.

That record shows what changed before, during, and after delivery. It also keeps a camera observation from becoming an unsupported intake claim.

Why dry matter belongs in the record

The same as-fed weight can carry a different amount of feed.

Dry matter is the part of feed left after water is removed. Silage moisture can change across a pile, after rain, or between harvest lots.

Iowa State advises monitoring dry matter and managing transitions between silages. Record when each result became active, not only the laboratory date.

Keep the nutritionist's ration record as the source for feed quantity and composition. Camera evidence cannot replace sampling, scales, or the feed call.

Record: Source pile, face location, sample date, dry matter, visible spoilage check, and ration version.

Record: Truck or load, as-fed weight, pen, delivery start and finish, and any delay or split delivery.

Bunk condition

What did the crew find before the next feed call?

Record: Bunk score, refusals, distribution, wet or dry spots, contamination, and direct cattle checks.

Visible activity

How did cattle use the bunk after delivery?

Record: Arrival timing, crowding, displacement, quiet sections, departures, coverage gaps, and reviewer notes.

The feedout workflow

Make every change traceable in five steps.

Name the silage source

Give each bunker, pile, bag, or harvest lot a stable name. Keep that name on samples, loads, ration changes, and feed calls.

Update dry matter

Dry matter is the feed left after water is removed. Record the current test and the time it became active in the ration.

Mark every transition

Record when a new face, lot, moisture result, or ration version enters the truck. Do not overwrite the previous value.

Connect the bunk review

Tie the pre-feed bunk score and visible cattle activity to the pen, delivery, weather window, and current ration.

Keep the reason for the call

Record the next feed call, who made it, and why. Keep direct feed tests and cattle checks beside the camera timeline.

What current research adds

Bunk timing can change behavior without giving one universal feed call.

A 2026 Nebraska study tested 12 to 24 hours of feed access in yearling heifers using electronic bunks. Longer access increased dry matter intake and daily intake variation.

Gain and feed conversion did not differ significantly across access times. That controlled study does not set a universal schedule for every commercial pen.

It does show why delivery time, access, and cattle behavior should stay beside the feed record. Local nutrition and cattle-care teams still direct the call.

A camera view never replaces a direct feed and site check.

North Dakota State advises discarding spoiled silage during feedout. Follow the operation's feed-safety plan and nutrition direction before changing or delivering a ration.

Keep people away from unstable silage faces and overhangs. Use the site's equipment, traffic, sampling, and face-management procedures.
