Fixed cattle cameras can document visible activity, pen position, bunk and water-zone use, crowding, handling windows, and coverage gaps.
They cannot measure every welfare condition or replace direct checks, veterinary care, or a formal feedyard assessment.
The useful workflow links each clip to the cattle group, time, pen, direct observation, action, and follow-up.
What the camera can preserve
Record what was visible and when
A fixed camera gives the animal-care team a repeatable view of a configured pen, gate, bunk, water point, alley, or chute.
Source clips let reviewers return to the same moment. They can compare observations without relying only on memory or a written summary.
Every observation should carry the camera state. Darkness, glare, weather, obstruction, outages, and time outside the view belong in the record.

Where the boundary sits
A camera view is one part of a welfare review
Video can show visible behavior and location inside a mapped view. It cannot reveal every cause, unseen event, internal condition, or care need.
An animal outside the frame is not proof of absence from feed, water, movement, or care.
Thermal imagery adds contrast in low visible light. It does not measure core temperature or provide a diagnosis by itself.
A qualified person still examines cattle, reviews facilities and records, applies care protocols, and decides what happens next.
Five steps for a reviewable record
Turn a clip into a completed cattle-care check
Name the cattle-care question
Choose the pen, cattle group, visible behavior, time window, and person responsible for the review.
Map what each camera can see
Mark covered bunks, water points, alleys, gates, shade, and blind areas. Record the view before interpreting activity.
Keep a normal reference window
Preserve ordinary activity from comparable times and conditions. Use it as context, not a medical threshold.
Send exceptions to a person
Give the crew a source clip, time, pen, visible change, and coverage note. Require a direct check when care may be needed.
Close the record
Add the direct observation, action, qualified guidance, follow-up, reviewer, and completion time. Keep the original source file unchanged.
